At Renewal by Andersen of Central Virginia, we believe every person deserves to feel safe, secure, and at home. That belief is what drew us to partner with Micah Ecumenical Ministries, a Fredericksburg nonprofit that has spent decades walking alongside neighbors experiencing homelessness and helping them find their way to stable, permanent housing.
We recently had the privilege of donating and installing a new entry door at a Micah-owned home in Fredericksburg, Virginia. To most people, it’s just a replacement door. But for the people who live behind it, a new high quality door means far more than that.
About Micah Ecumenical Ministries
Micah Ecumenical Ministries has been caring for unhoused neighbors in the Fredericksburg region since the late 1980s. Formally established in 2005, Micah is a collaboration of nine downtown congregations across six denominations. A true community of faith putting its values into action.
Their mission is rooted in a simple but powerful call: to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly. Every day, that mission looks like wrap-around support, intensive case management, and genuine relationships built on trust and respect with neighbors who have often been overlooked by the world around them.
Micah’s work spans the greater Fredericksburg region, including Stafford and Spotsylvania, and reaches neighbors at every stage of their journey. From cold weather shelters and day services at the Neighbor Care Center on Princess Anne Street, to long-term permanent supportive housing.

Permanent Supportive Housing is More Than a Roof
One of Micah’s most important programs is their Permanent Supportive Housing program, known as PSH. It’s built on a foundational truth: some neighbors need more than a unit to move into. They need support to stay housed.
Many of the neighbors Micah serves have disabilities, chronic illnesses developed from years of living rough, and mental health conditions. The PSH program is designed specifically for them. Offering case management and stabilizing support for as long as each individual needs it. That can mean years. It can mean a lifetime.
This isn’t charity. It’s accompaniment. Micah meets neighbors where they are and helps them lead the most flourishing lives possible. Addressing the root causes of homelessness, not just its immediate effects.
The home is one of the small properties Micah owns directly. Acquired about 15 years ago through a generous donation, it has housed formerly homeless neighbors ever since. The people living there now have called it home for several years. They care for the house, and it is genuinely theirs.
Why Renewal by Andersen Got Involved
Community giving isn’t an afterthought. At Renewal by Andersen of Central Virginia, it’s built into how we operate. Our Renewal Cares Committee is made up of team members across Central Virginia dedicated to finding meaningful ways to serve the communities where we live and work.
When the opportunity arose to support a Micah home in Fredericksburg, the answer was simple. We had a door to donate, the expertise to install it properly, and a team that wanted to show up for their community.

From Worn to Welcoming
The home is lovingly cared for by its residents. But time had taken its toll on the front door. The effects of an aging property were starting to show.
Our installation team got to work removing the old door and fitting the new one with the same craftsmanship and attention to detail we bring to every project, regardless of size. The result speaks for itself.
As Jill Clare, Executive Administrator at Micah Ecumenical Ministries, put it: “The new door allows the residents to have a beautiful front door to walk into, and to feel safe and secure in their home.”

What One Entry Door Can Do
For neighbors who have experienced chronic homelessness or who have lived rough, navigated crisis after crisis, and worked hard to build stability, the details of home carry enormous weight.
A solid, well-installed front door isn’t a small thing. It means:
- Security — Feeling genuinely safe inside your own home, every single day.
- Dignity — A front door that reflects the care and pride residents bring to their home.
- Warmth — A properly fitted door keeps the elements out and energy costs down, which matters on a fixed budget.
Every neighbor deserves to feel that sense of security. We were glad to help make it happen.
Jeremiah Community, a Community on the Horizon
Micah’s work is growing. In one of the most exciting developments for homeless services in the Fredericksburg region, Micah is preparing to break ground on Jeremiah Community, a supportive housing community of 50 small homes surrounding a shared community center, designed specifically for neighbors who have experienced chronic homelessness.
Construction is expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027. It is an ambitious, hopeful project and a sign of what a community can accomplish when it commits to caring for its most vulnerable neighbors.

Showing Up for Our Neighbors
Micah Ecumenical Ministries believes in a Fredericksburg region where all neighbors have a home. We think that’s worth showing up for with time, skills, and resources when we have them to give.
We’re grateful to Jill Clare and the entire Micah team for welcoming us into this work. We look forward to finding more ways to serve alongside organizations like Micah that are doing what matters most in our community.
