If you’ve got leftover building materials, furniture, or household items sitting in your garage, there’s a good chance your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore can put them to use, and help a family in your community at the same time.
Habitat for Humanity’s mission is simple: a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Habitat affiliates across Virginia work toward that goal by building, rehabilitating, and repairing safe, affordable homes for local families. ReStores are one of the ways that mission gets funded.
What Is a Habitat for Humanity ReStore?
Habitat ReStores are independently owned reuse stores operated by local Habitat for Humanity organizations. They accept donations of gently used building materials, furniture, appliances, and household goods, then resell that inventory to the public at a fraction of retail price, while keeping usable items out of area landfills.
Every dollar spent at a ReStore goes back into the local Habitat affiliate’s work: building and repairing homes for families in Central Virginia.
What Items Does ReStore Accept?
ReStores generally welcome donations like:
- Building materials (lumber, doors, cabinets, flooring, hardware)
- Furniture in good condition
- Appliances that are clean and in working order
- Home décor and household goods
What Items Does ReStore Not Accept?
Because ReStore resells everything it receives, items need to be functional, clean, and safe. As of this writing, most local ReStores do not accept:
- Broken or nonfunctional items
- Items with rips, stains, or pet hair
- Corporate office furniture
- Sleeper sofas or mattresses
- Heavy entertainment centers
- Tube or plasma TVs
- Used faucets, tubs, or shower doors
- Unframed mirrors or glass
- Clothes and linens
- Opened paint or chemicals
- Infant or medical equipment
- Exercise equipment
- Pianos
- Gas appliances or dishwashers
Accepted-item lists can vary by location and change over time, so it’s worth checking with your local ReStore or their donation portal before you load up the truck.
How does donating to ReStore help Virginia families?
ReStore isn’t like other thrift stores. The money raised by Habitat ReStores helps Virginia families build a decent and affordable place to call home. When the items you donate to ReStore are sold, the money helps build homes, communities and hope in Virginia.

Why Renewal by Andersen of Central Virginia Donates to Habitat ReStores
As a replacement window and replacement door company, we regularly have surplus materials, discontinued samples, and overstock that are still in great condition but no longer part of our active inventory. Rather than let those materials go to waste, we look for ways to put them back into the community.
In 2022, Renewal by Andersen of Central Virginia (then operating as Richmond Window Corp) donated more than 100 units, or two full truckloads, of materials to our local Richmond Habitat for Humanity ReStore. That donation helped stock ReStore shelves with quality materials at accessible prices, while supporting Habitat’s mission of building affordable, energy-efficient homes for families across the region.
